Vista Seekers, September Hike
Wednesday, September 24,
Location: Rainbow Road Toll Road, Lookout Mountain
Time: 8:00am, Meet at Legends parking lot (In Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure) on the far-right side.
Although it has a long name it is only a 3.4 mile hike or less depending on if you want to take a shorter route down. The hike ascends 853 feet and is considered moderate. There are some steep sections, and the terrain has many rocks and roots. Most of this trail is wooded/shaded and there is supposedly one long view lookout which we did not see firsthand because a bear came walking towards us when we were moments away! Hiking poles, bear spray and snacks are recommended. We will meet at Legends parking lot (In Rumbling Bald on Lake Lure) on the far-right side by 8:00am. We will depart at 8:15 for a 9:00 arrival at the trail parking area. This trail is on private property and a $5 per car parking fee is charged on an honor system via a QR code on signage in the parking lot. After the hike, we will meet for lunch at Hillman Brewery in Old Fort. Please RSVP directly to Donna Frider if you are attending the hike, to dlrfrider@gmail.com. If you want to meet us at the trailhead, there are 3 parking lots. The first 2 are on the right side of Lookout Road. We will meet at the second parking lot. If both lots are full, there is an overflow parking just a bit further up the road on the right. This hike is lead by Donna and Jim Frider.
Directions to trailhead:
Drive north on Buffalo Creek Road until it ends on Cedar Creek Road (3.9 miles from Rumbling Bald) Turn left.
Drive 3.9 miles to the end of Cedar Creek. Turn right onto Bat Cave/Old Fort Road.
Drive 7.2 miles to Interstate 40. Turn left onto I 40 West.
Drive 7.5 miles on I 40 to Exit 65. Exit here and go about 1000 ft. until you see Tractor Supply store. Turn right onto Flat Creek Road.
Drive 1.1 mile to stop sign. Turn right onto Montreat Road.
Drive 1 mile to Lookout Road Turn right.
Go about ½ mile past the stop sign and you will see 2 small parking lots on your right.

October Hikes
Monday, October 6th
Location: Bearwollow
Time: 5:00pm
Lynda David and Nancy Nelson are leading a sunset hike up Bearwallow on October 6 which is a full moon night. The full moon is known as the Harvest Moon and it will also be a Supermoon, meaning it will appear larger and brighter than a typical full moon due to its closer proximity to Earth. Sunset is 7:05 pm so we’ll start at 5 pm at the trailhead. This should give us an hour to get up there and time to enjoy dinner and company before coming down the road after sunset. Bring your own picnic dinner and beverage. Dogs need to be leased and under control because of the food. Bring something to sit on and bring insect spray and something to light your way down the mountain. AT THIS TIME, we cannot go up Bearwallow Road so we have to approach and come down from the trailhead, on the Edneyville side, from 64. I’m hoping things will change by Oct 6 but cannot say so it’s important that you RSVP so we can let you know of any changes. We are not considering meeting to carpool because of the uncertainty of how we get there but of course you can carpool among yourselves. GPS works or you can contact Lynda and me closer to the time. This is a lot of fun! It is a mile up on the trail and a mile down on the road so pretty accessible for most people. Hope you can come!

Wednesday, October 15th
Location: Black Balsam Knob and Tennent Mountain
Time: 8am-meet at Ingles (south end of the parking lot); carpool departure-8:15am. Arriving at the trailhead at appx. 10:15am. Return time is appx. 3pm.
RSVP: Please text Val Kager by October 1st if you plan to attend: 813-546-8629
Join us for this beautiful hike just off the Blueridge Parkway in Pisgah National Forest. We are scheduling this hike for peak leaf viewing at this elevation. This out and back hike leaves from the Black Balsam Knob/Art Loeb Trail parking area and begins with a quick ascent to Black Balsam Knob at 6244 ft. elevation. We will pause here to enjoy the view of the changing leaves. We will continue along the ridgeline to Tennent Mountain, stopping there for lunch, then will return via the same route. Our total mileage will be around 3.7 miles, with about 700 feet of elevation gain. Depending on time and trail conditions, we may offer an optional extension of the hike to the next knob (Grassy Cove Top) if anyone is interested. We will provide an update in late September. We will plan to stop for a beverage at Ecusta or Oskar Blues Brewing following the hike. Please Note: We will definitely need to carpool for this hike due to limited parking and high demand during the fall. Hiking poles will be helpful on this hike. Please bring plenty of water and pack a lunch. Dogs are welcome but need to be leashed due to the amount of people on the trail.
